Can Jeremie Frimpong defend?

Typically, my paid posts come out on Fridays but, of course, plans had to change last week given the heartbreaking news. There was only one man to write about: the lad from Portugal; it goes without saying that cannot be behind a paywall. Rest in peace, Diogo. Never to be forgotten.

Everyone’s favourite former Liverpool legend turned pundit, Steve Nicol, recently opened his mouth again. Steve loves to do that.

The ink isn’t even dry on Jeremie Frimpong’s Liverpool contract and the European Cup winning full back, in 1984, has already decided to write him off.

“Defensively, it’s not good. It’s just the same as Trent, he’s not that great a defender. I don’t see where he fits in, I really don’t.” - Steve Nicol

Nicol is, of course, exceptionally qualified to be opinionated about full backs: he’s only one of the best to ever play that role in a Liverpool shirt. But it’s far from the first strange comment of his about his former home.

You might recall his criticism of Mohamed Salah in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest, the first time in over *three* months where Mo didn’t score or assist in a Premier League match: “Salah’s really frustrating. I mean, he really is. It’s kind of feast or famine with him – he either stands on it, miscontrols it, gives it away; and then the next minute, he sticks it in the top corner. That’s generally what he does.“ I could probably conjure up over a hundred adjectives about Mohamed Salah before reaching ‘frustrating’.

Anyways, Nicol’s comments on Frimpong served as food for thought.
